08 Mar Discover the Early Symptoms of Glaucoma
Here comes the World Glaucoma Week 2021 #glaucomaweek. A global initiative week that gives us extra reasons to raise awareness on Glaucoma, an eye disease that causes blindness. This disease damages the optic nerve, the part of our eye that carries the images we see to our brain.
In a healthy eye, a clear liquid circulates in the front portion of the eye. To maintain a constant healthy eye pressure, the eye continually produces a small amount of this fluid and an equal amount which flows out of the eye. If you have glaucoma, the fluid does not flow properly through the drainage system. Fluid pressure in the eye increases and this extra force presses on the optic nerve in the back of the eye, causing damage to the nerve fibres.
This damage is caused by the elevated eye pressure also known as ocular hypertension or weakness in the optic nerve.
Everyone is at risk of Glaucoma from babies to senior citizens. Your age, color of the skin, family background does not matter, no one is naturally immune to it. Although, a lot of factors like hereditary, medical condition such as diabetes, age bracket can increase the risk of this disease but with regular testing, we can continue to see the world around us: full of beauty, charm, and adventure.
There are frequently no obvious symptoms in the early stages of chronic glaucoma. This disease has fewer early warning signs than other major eye diseases. The most efficient detection method for glaucoma is by regular eye examination. So, what are you still waiting for ?
